Etienne Robichaud - Genealogy Correction from Stephen A. White

A correction to my blog of January 22nd from Stephen A. White:

"In 1994 I did include mention of Louis "Robichau" in my sketch of the ancestry of the Robichauds for my compilation on the "Trente-sept familles."  My purpose in placing his family name in quotation marks may not have been altogether clear, but I did so and carefully referred to Msgr. Tanguay's Dictionnaire généalogique des familles canadiennes because I had doubts about the validity of the identification of Louis as the Robichaud ancestor.  That is also why I took pains to use the conditional tense in saying that it was Placide Gaudet who would have had it that Louis was the father of the Étienne Robichaud who lived in Acadia.  Unfortunately, at that time I had not yet obtained the proof about Louis.
By 1999 I did have the proof.  It shows that Msgr. Tanguay had led everyone astray by a misreading of the sole record that mentions Louis.  He was not a Robichaud at all, but Louis Rebicher.  I was lucky in that someone had in the meantime brought me a photocopy of his burial record to set me straight about just who had been buried at Québec in 1649.  Nowadays, I believe that anyone can see the original record on the Familysearch website.  However that may be, I did explain in the DGFA-1 (p. 1402; p. 293-294 in the English Supplement) that there is no way that anyone can connect Louis Rebicher to Étienne Robichaud, as Placide Gaudet had wanted to do."

The following is taken from the English Supplement of the Dictionnaire généalogique des familles acadiennes by Stephen A. White - pages 293-294

Louis "ROBICHAU"
Explanatory Note
According to Placide Gaudet, "Louis Robichaud was born in France in 1609 and died at Québec in 1649, during a voyage that he made there from Port-Royal.  He is the ancestor of the family of this name in Acadia. *** He must have married about 1636 or 1637. I do not know the name of his wife.***  I only know about two of his sons.  The elder, named Charles, was born in 1638...***  The other, who was born in 1640, had the name Étienne..."  But the only document that is known concerning Louis is his burial record at Québec.  From a copy of this record it has been verified that it was Louis REBICHER, and not ROBICHAU, who died at Québec in 1649.  It thus seems that, lacking any suorting documentation, no one can make out a connection between Louis Rebicher and Étienne Robichaud as Gaudet had wanted to.

Generation No. 1

1.  ÉTIENNE1 ROBICHAUD was born Abt. 1640, and died Bef. 1686 in Port- Royal , Acadia.  He married FRANÇOISE BOUDREAU Abt. 1663, daughter of MICHEL BOUDREAU and MICHELLE AUCOIN.  She was born Abt. 1642, and died Aft. 1714.

ROBICHAUD, Étienne, came from France with his wife, according to his great-great-grandson Pierre Doucet (Doc. inéd., Vol. III, p. 53). Pierre erroneously attributed the first name of Charles to his forebear, probably because his great-grandfather Prudent Robichaud had an older brother by that name. He does not mention the name of his great-great-grandmother, but she was Françoise Boudrot, according to several early censuses (see DGFA-1, pp.1403-1404). Despite his deposition, it is quite unlikely that Françoise came from France. She was the eldest daughter of Michel Boudrot and Michelle Aucoin (ibid., p. 184). It is well established, by no fewer than four depositions (Doc. inéd., Vol. III, pp. 36, 39, 41, 120) that both of them came from France, but other documentation showing that Michel Boudrot was already in Acadia by 1639, three years before Françoise?s birth, suggests that she must have been born in the colony (see DGFA-1, pp. 184-186).
